ABSTRACT
Se realizó un estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo y transversal de 18 pacientes (23 ojos) de 0-15 años con catarata, atendidos en el Servicio de Oftalmología del Hospital Docente Infantil Sur de Santiago de Cuba, durante el 2011, a fin de caracterizar a la población infantil operada de catarata. En la casuística predominaron los varones de 5-9 años (53,8 %) y la catarata congénita (60,9 %). Entre las complicaciones más frecuentes figuraron: opacidad de la cápsula posterior, ectopia pupilar y uveítis. La mayoría de los afectados lograron una visión mayor de 0,5 corregida con cristales, con un porcentaje elevado de implante de lente intraocular, lo cual garantizó el buen pronóstico visual de los mismos con mejoría en su calidad de vida, y su incorporación de forma activa a la sociedad.
A descriptive, retrospective and cross sectional study of 18 patients (23 eyes) from 0-15 years with cataract, assisted in the Ophthalmology Service of the Southern Teaching Pediatric Hospital in Santiago de Cuba was carried out during 2011, in order to characterize the cataract operated pediatric population. The 5-9 years males (53.8%) and the congenital cataract (60.9%) prevailed in the case material. Among the most frequent complications there were: opacity of the posterior capsule, pupillary ectopia and uveitis. Most of those affected achieved a vision higher than 0.5 corrected with glasses, with a high percentage of implanted intraocular lens, which guaranteed the good visual prognosis with improvement in their life quality, and their incorporation to society in an active way.
